Worried about your next mortgage payment?

Where to begin before or after a missed payment.

Start the conversation early.

Call the servicer listed on your mortgage statement when you expect trouble paying. Explain what changed and whether the hardship may be temporary. Ask how to apply for assistance and what deadlines apply.

Understand the terms.

Forbearance is an agreed pause or reduction in payments, not forgiveness. Ask when the unpaid balance is due, how interest is handled, and what your payments will look like afterward. Options depend on your loan and circumstances.

Get help with urgent notices.

A HUD-approved housing counselor can help you understand your options. If a sale is approaching or legal papers arrive, seek qualified legal help promptly. A website inquiry does not stop a sale or extend a deadline.
